EMCON 2007

The 9th Annual Conference of the Society for Emergency Medicine in India, EMCON 2007, took place November 16 through November 18 at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute in Chennai, on the Coramandal Coast of South India. The conference was jointly sponsored by AAEMI, SEMI and the North Shore LIJ- Health System. The theme this year was “Trends and Strategies in Emergency Medicine.”

This year’s conference brought together more than 400 attendees and more than 50 faculty from all over the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Pakistan, Nepal, and Malaysia, to mention a few.
The American Academy of Emergency Medicine India (AAEMI) played a major role in the educational committee. Over the three days, several AAEMI members gave lectures on subjects from Review of Trauma Literature to Treatment of the Acutely Intoxicated Patient, and put on practical workshops on many different subjects including C Spine Immobilization and Establishing an Airway.

At the Inaugural ceremonies, 3 of AAEMI’s past presidents were recognized for their contributions to EMCON as well as 3 past Presidents of ACEP. This year Dr. Lingappa Amernath has been much appreciated for inviting Dr. John McCabe (Past president of ACEP and ABEM and President and Chair of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Upstate at Syracuse), to contribute to EMCON 2007. Now Syracuse University also joined a team of US institutions including LIJ, Loma Linda, Stanford, USC, NYU, NYP, GWU with which AAEMI has close ties.
.
At EMCON 2007, a huge hurdle was overcome when the chairman of India’s national medical board, Dr.Rajasekharan gave his approval of Emergency Medicine as a specialty in India. This will open the door to universities, public and private, to begin the establishment Emergency Medicine Residency Programs.

This year’s EMCON was approved for 24 hours of ACEP Category I credit, by the American College of Emergency Physicians, thanks to CME efforts of Dr.Kumar Alagappan & LIJ.
